Kyla wanted to go with Stone, but she had work to do. When he finally turned and climbed the stairs to the top, she let go of the breath she’d been holding.

The entire time the team had been in the room, she’d watched as they’d interacted and poked fun at each other.

Kyla’s heart swelled at the easy camaraderie of the team of men. They respected and trusted one another. She hadn’t found that kind of connection in the CIA and never in her secret life as an assassin.

The men were lucky to have each other and a network of brothers who had their backs.

Stone had made a good point about joining forces with the Brotherhood Protectors to capitalize on shared expertise. Especially when it came to computers and the internet.

Kyla knew computers and how to get around on the internet. And she was fairly good at hacking into databases. At the very least, she knew people who were even better at it.

Her time in the CIA and on the Dark Web had paid off more than once. Ahmadi wouldn’t have made it out of his home alive, if not for her contacts and her ability to ferret out the truth. She hoped it paid off in her search for answers to what had happened in Kandahar.

She needed access to the internet. Her gaze went to the computers, keyboards and monitors in the room. If she could use them while she was there, she might get a good start on her search for the truth.

When Kyla faced Swede, the big, blond man cocked an eyebrow. “Something I should know about you and Stone?”

Heat rushed into her cheeks. “Of course not.”

“Sure.” He turned toward the monitors and clicked a few keys, bringing up the security camera images. “What did you want to know?”

“I was hoping to conduct research on some of the people I interviewed while I was in Kandahar. Would it be possible for me to use one of your computers with access to the internet?”

Swede nodded. “I could set you up. I’ll have to block your access to our proprietary data, but I don’t see any problem with you using the internet.”

She smiled. “I understand. I’m working on a story and need to pull together all the pieces.”

Again, not a complete lie. She needed to know the full story in order to find those at the root of the kill order. No longer in Afghanistan, she couldn’t just run out and ask people questions. All she could hope for was a trail of clues leading to the source.

Swede pulled a laptop from a shelf, spent a few minutes clicking keys until he finally handed over the laptop. “It’s all yours. You don’t have to stay down here if you don’t want to. The WIFI works all over the house and out to the barn.

“If it’s all right by you, I like the quiet down here. Do you mind if I stay?”

“Not at all. I’ll be here for at least another two hours.
